Picking the Perfect Cycling Bicycle is Easier Said Than Done

There are lots of reasons to take up cycling. There are those who decide to take up cycling because the price of gas is too high and the cost of maintenance on a vehicle is too high. There are those who choose to cycle because they want to do their part in helping the environment.

And there are other riders who love to do it because it's fun. No matter your reason for choosing to take up cycling, you need to know some important things before you decide on your first bicycle. If you really want to choose the perfect cycling bicycle, you need to think about more than just what it looks like. This article gives you some tips and pointers to help you pick the bicycle that will be perfect for you.

You need to make sure you pick a bike that is the right size. For this you must calculate your inseam. Your inseam is the amount of inches from the bottom of your foot, up the inside of your leg to your groin. When you get a bike you should be able to lay both feet flat to the ground if need be. If you can do this you need not worry about stopping in an emergency if your brakes malfunction.

For a road bike you should take away 9" from the inseam measurement you took earlier. This is down to the tires a road bike equips. These tires will be thinner and designed for efficiency on concrete roads or pavements. If you are looking for a mountain bike, you will want to subtract about a foot (twelve inches) from your inseam measurement. Mountain bikes have different tires than a road bike. Mountain bike tires will be thick and designed for mountainous terrain. You can of course use a mountain bike for road cycling but this isn't supposed to be their primary use.

How many gears do you need? Choose according to how you’ll ride; mountainous areas require more gears than flat land areas do. Just because a bike has more gears doesn't make it better. The truth is that you might not need all of those different gears. It’s a waste of money to pay for all those unused gears. Find out where you’ll ride your bike, especially if this is your main vehicle, and make sure you have enough gears to handle the areas through which you will travel. Several different factors play into how you are going to choose the right bicycle. Are you going to be riding your bicycle every day or riding it only when you feel the urge to? Which height is most comfortable for you? Would you rather have room between your feet and the ground or see it here would you rather be able to touch the ground with your feet when you come to a stop? All of these factors will come into play as you make your choice.
